Anglers Starting To Hook Up on the Miramichi River.

Miramichi Fishing Reports for June 17th on the Main South West Miramichi River. Anglers over the last week have been seeing fish on the lower stretches and upper stretches of the river.

Fisherman were hooking fish on the lower stretches to name a few were Eddy Colford with a grilse and a salmon, A Wades member said Jason Curtis released a grilse, Brad Burns also had a salmon and grilse, Marshal Arbeau landed a salmon in Upper Blackville. So there are fish around if your looking to hook up just have patience. This time of year they will be moving through very fast.

I was seeing a lot of fish yesterday around the mouth of Cains area as I hooked a salmon on a number 4 white tail green machine using my double hand 15 foot Loop. I raised him 3 times and then he grabbed it and made two jumps before saying good bye to me! I rolled a few more and things went quite the rest of the evening. There was lots of Shad playing around in the upper pools but after hooking a salmon I had no interest in fishing shad!

Kenny Keenan was fishing for trout at the Mouth of Cains River and had still been catching a few the past few evenings. He had saw a few last night but had no takers when I was talking to him.

I was fishing the North West for a few days and also had some friends fishing there too. The water was good from the last rain and had dropped down to good levels. But the catching for all of us were a big fat Zero! We saw a few fish but very few on the stretches we were fishing. Other anglers were seeing a few but had not hooked up.

The water temperature was around 64F and the water level of the lower section of the river was high and needs to drop at least a foot. Very High tides for the next 12 days so there should be some good runs of fish making there way in. The tides starting tomorrow are 1.21 meters high and keeps on going up to 1.81 meters high over the next 12 days. The new moon is on the 22nd for those of you watching for that. Silvers On The Miramichi

Salmon Fishing On The Miramichi over the last few days has been slow on the Main South West Miramichi. But as for the North West Miramichi there was a good run for a few days and still the odd fish being seen on different stretches of the river. We hooked a few on the 29th of May on wet flies. Joel Kitchen again struck first landing a beautiful Springer! silver as a chrome bumper on a car! He hooked the fish on a white tail green machine #8. Dick Lac and buddy Dave from New Hampshire was fishing with me and Dave hooked into his 1st ever Atlantic Salmon and held him just a bit to hard as it straightened the hook on the double #6 green machine. He then had 4 more good hits but none hooked like his first one. We hooked a few small trout Friday as well, they were in the 8 to 12 inch range. We were hoping to hook into some big sea trout but the chance never came for us this week.

There was also good reports from other sections of the river for Friday from Trout Brook Fly Shop. Anglers were dropping by the shop where it is always the best news to find out the reports of the river on the North West and telling there stories of the fish they saw or hooked.

Sydney owner of the fly shop said anglers were hooking trout and salmon on the river. Most other anglers I was talking too had saw some fish. Jim Steeves of Moncton hooked a salmon on Sunday on the North West Miramichi. He had some good trout fishing on the Bartholomew River the day before he told me.

From Monday until today things have been slow fishing for us except for the odd trout from 8 to 12 inches and one being 15 inches. I fished the Main South West Miramichi this morning and saw a fish moving through one of the pools but could not tell if it was a grilse or trout, it was moving through very fast in the clear water. We did hook a few small brookies around 10 inches in the Upper Blackville area of the river.

As for Shad? I have not saw any signs yet but they should be very close to arriving on the lower stretches of the SW Miramichi River. I will post and let you know as soon as I see them for those who are inquiring about them.

Cains River: We also fished the Cains River again but had no luck with getting any big sea trout. I was told there was over 200 trout hundred put through in Juniper at the counter on the Main SW Miramichi. Maybe there will more to come if were lucky, lets hope there is.

The Weather the next few days looks very good with highs from 15C to 25C. Calling for some showers on Sunday and late next week. Not the kind of weather the fisherman maybe looking for to get as the river are starting to get low in some sections.

Tides the next few days are starting to improve with tonight's high tide being at 10:13PM at 0.72 meters. Friday it is 10:37PM 0.76 meters. And then it gets better starting on Saturday with high tide of 1.35 meters at 10:00AM and 11:03PM of 0.81 meters. And for Sunday you are looking at tides of 1.25 meters high tide at 10:40AM and then again at 11:35PM of 0.88 meters.

Fishing May be Better for the Miramichi by Weekend

Miramichi Fishing Reports and Conditions for the lower stretches of the SW Miramichi River.

Fishing is very slow on the lower stretches of the river with only a few being landed. Joel Kitchen junior landed a grilse and salmon on a blue smelt above the mouth of Cains River today. There is still several smelts around on the lower stretches of the Miramichi.

I was getting a few on Tuesday night and scooped a fresh trout about 10 inches long! It was a nice trout very silver in color and no black in its mouth, so the fresh trout must be on there way. I did release this trout back.

I am seeing a lot of salmon jumping so there are still a few springer's around for us to hook while were waiting for a silver, chrome Rocky Brook Salmon! Just can't wait!

The water temperature was 56F. There is a few may flies on the water. Last night we also had black flies and moskidoes (mosquitoes) our miramichi slang!

The weather for the next few days will be from 12C to 20C .

Friday Cloudy with 40 percent chance of showers early in the morning then a mix of sun and cloud. Wind southwest 20 km/h gusting to 40 becoming light in the afternoon.

Fiddle Heads
Nothing goes better with salmon and trout than Fiddle Heads. Fiddle heads are up in a few places where the sun gets at them and should be up very good by the weekend on the Miramichi area. I hear on other parts of NB they have been up for over a week.

Miramichi Salmon Classic
Just a reminder that registration is open for the 2009 Miramichi Salmon Classic. The Miramichi Salmon Association will hold their fourth annual Miramichi Salmon Classic from July 12 to July 15, 2009, a four day event with three days of fishing on the Miramichi River. You are invited to come to Miramichi and experience fishing the Little South West Miramichi, Renous, Dungarvon, Main South West Miramichi and many other classic tributaries with Miramichi Salmon Association volunteer guides. A three day hook and release license is also provided. Last year's event took place at the peak of the grilse run and the grilse run in 2008 was the best in the past 15 years. Huge Atlantic Salmon on the Cain's River

Fly fishing report for the Miramichi & Cain’s River by Guide Rodney Colford.

Fishing on the Cain's River again this morning and had very good results. Ron Falausy of Pennsylvania landed a grilse covered in sea lice, then tightened on another that looked to be a grilse and then he hooked this whale of a salmon 46 inches long! I estimated it to be around 35lb’s. It was a huge female salmon. We have pictures of the salmon and I will post them in the next day or so.

Bill Moore hooked a grilse this morning as well about at noon.
Guide Gary Colford and sport Jim Messel landed a salmon on a lT Special.
Flies this morning were GP’S and LT Special‘s. A lot of fish were showing this morning on the Cain’s River. The water temperature was 49 F and it was a very sunny morning. The barometric pressure was rising all morning as well.

I checked a few pools on the lower stretches of the main Miramichi and it looked very fishable! We also saw some in the pools we were at. I hope they take tonight?

Fishing still good on the Cain's

On the Miramichi River for Colfords Guiding Services, Report by guide Rodney Colford. Still fishing the Cain's River with very good results. Guide Gary Colford sports landed a couple this morning. Jim Messel landed a salmon and rolled a couple more. Christian Staffas landed a grilse on a LT special on the Cain's as well. Guide Rodney Colford sports landed a 8 lb salmon on the Cain's and lost another using a GP #2 single. This evening sport Bill Moore lost a huge salmon 20 pounds or more and still growing!! Ha! He was using a GP again. Guide Gary Colfords sports Christian Staffas landed a grilse & salmon on the Cain's this evening again using the LT special. Jim Messel rolled one twice but could not get it to take.

The water temperature on the Cain's River was 45 F this morning and still only 47 F tonight. The water was clear today but very black in color. The water level is very good on the Cain's and there are fish showing in most pools up and down the river. The barometric pressure was dropping all day and stayed damp on the Miramichi area. Reports for the main SW Miramichi River are still slow in most of our pools with very few fish being hooked or seen. maybe tomorrow with a little more drop in water over night?

October fishing proving good for the Cain's

Miramichi Fishing Report by Guide Rodney Colford. Fishing on the Cain's has been very good on the lower stretches of the river. This morning we landed 5 fish, 2 salmon and 3 grilse. Flies were LT special #1/0, big flies. The water temperature was 47 F this morning, also it was very chilly after having a frost. But the warm fire by the shore was perfect after releasing a salmon back. Last night before dark we managed to hook up with 3 more fish, 1 salmon 2 grilse. Also another report on the Cain’s from Vaughn Anthony is the green slime worked well for him this morning hooking 5 fish. We also noticed that there was very few fish showing and only seeing them after they take. Nothing wrong with that I guess?

Orange Flies worked on the Cain's

Fishing today on the Cain’s was outstanding! Guides Rodney & Gary Colford got into 4 fish this morning and had a 16 inch trout at Moore’s Pool. We also had several others take the fly but only bumped and was gone. The fly was a orange blossom special. One of the salmon caught was a 14 lb hen covered with sea lice fresh from the bay.

The water temperature was 45 F and was very clear. The winds picked up and made it very cool for the most part of the morning. So our fire made it very cozy to get warmed up by.

The main SW Miramichi River was slow today by the mouth of Cain’s. Still very high for this stretch of the river. Pool 66 was not producing any fish nor even seeing any. I think the fish are moving through very fast in this high water we have and when you get them up the Cain’s as far as we are with sea lice they must be moving through very quickly.

Atlantic Salmon takes on the Cain's

The Miramichi River Report for the 6th of Oct. It was a cool day on the river with sunny periods for the most part. The air temperature is 9 C. The water temperature is 47 F. There is a high tide tonight at 11:13 PM and is 1.35 meters high. The water was very clear today but with the normal dark color it looks dirty if you do not look closely.

Now for the fishing today! The Cain’s was fishing very well today at Moore’s Pool for the Colford’s with 6 fish hooked and 5 landed by noon. Then I hooked another at 3:30 on a undertaker #8 double. It was around 7 lbs male. We saw several fish jumping today so maybe they are starting to move up river a bit. The water was down by another foot on the Cain’s but is still very high for most pools in the lower stretches of the river. The Miramichi dropped a foot or so as well but I have no reports from the river as how the fishing was today. Then just before dark this evening Guide Gary Colford landed a 25 pound salmon in the middle of the Moore's Pool.

Miramichi Fishing Report

South West Miramichi River Report by Rodney Colford. Fishing today was slow for the Cains River area with guide Gary Colford landing a salmon and raising a couple more on a small black fly. On the Miramichi today Wintson Gilks of Blissfield landed a couple salmon trolling with a sinking line.The water level is still very high but with the cool nights we should see a fast drop in the levels. Last night and today we saw a drop of about 3 feet. The water looks very clear and anglers should start picking up more fish in the next few days. And with no rain in the forecast the season should be looking very good for the end of the 2008 season.
