Heavy rains hit the river

Fishing on the Miramichi River over the past week has gotten to be a challenge on many parts of the river. Heavy rains are becoming to be a well mentioned topic on my river reports as once again we were hit by lots of rain to raise the water to like spring levels. And with a 2 to 3 foot rise in water on top of which was high water to begin with really put the pressure on guides and fisherman to hook up with the king of sport fish “The Atlantic Salmon”.

Many fishermen were turning to larger flies and sinking tips, many have to use boats as most pools are just too high to wade at this height with so much water. Fishermen are also starting to use a mixture of patterns and the fall patterns are being mentioned more and more.

Up around Doaktown at the Ledges Inn we are starting to hook a few fish again. Tuesday was a bad day as we did not hook a fish. Yesterday Wednesday we fished again from boats and landed a few. I was guiding Steven and Tami Gross from Atlanta and they hooked their 3^rd grilse using a night hawk. Head guide Derek Munn hooked his 2 salmon on a GP. Before the raise in water we were having very good fishing landing in double digits on some days.

Canoe Missing: This time a 18 foot cranberry red chestnut poling canoe. If anyone has saw the canoe please contact the Ledges Inn at 506 365 0168.

Fishing is starting to pick up again in the Blackville area as a few fish were hooked near the mouth of Cains River and Pool 66.

Cains River is starting to fish again with a few fresh fish moving through. We have landed a few at Moores Pool up near Shinnick Burn on the Cains. There were also a few landed at the Brophy Pool on the lower end of the Cains.

The next week is looking good for fishing with a little less rain in the forecast. Be safe fishing in the high water this fall.

Several fish in the system

Your Miramichi river report for the past week has had some ups and downs but there are several fish in the system to fish for if you decide to get out on the river.

Starting in the Quarryville area with Goerge Rutledge’s Fly Shop. George said fishing was slow except for a few guys hooking fish in early mornings. He also said this rain should pick things up again.

In the Blackville area at Curtis River Outfitters shop said fishing was average for this time of year and with the heavy rain yesterday it should start getting good again. Canoeing was very good last week and there are always extra canoes for rent.

Mountain Channel was still hooking fish in the mornings but only a few fish were running through.

Country Haven Fishing Lodge was hooking fish everyday in some of their pools. They were also doing well on the Cains River and Renous River.

Pool 66 near Black Brook Pool was fishing very well all week and yesterday in the rain it was fishing extremely well as many huge salmon were taking the fly. Danny Munn of Doaktown landed 2 salmon and a grilse by 10:00 am yesterday on a few of my bombers. My son Zach lost 3 on brown bombers and saw many more fish.

The Bridge Pool in Upper Blackville was fishing in the early mornings and the fly of choice was a green butt moose hair.

In the Doaktown area at the Ledges Inn fishing has been very good the past week in early mornings. Head Guide Derek Munn said the fish were getting more selective in the low water. Derek fished the past couple of weeks with Dr. Scott Boley and his wife Sanda (Sonny) Boley from the Bronx, NY. Dr. Boley said he fished here the past 53 years and can’t remember ever seeing so many fish. Scott told me he was to Russia several times and nothing compares to the Miramichi. Scott and his wife hooked over a hundred fish in 18 days fishing at the Ledges Inn with Derek.

The past week we had some very hot conditions at the Ledges Inn. We decided to take advantage of the cooler mornings and very late evenings. Most mornings we hooked or rolled fish, Andrew Anthony, Lloyd Lyons and I rotated the pools and many mornings we hooked up with our clients.

The River conditions were from 61 (F) in the cold water pools to 76 (F) in the late afternoon in the hot days. Now since the rain yesterday the water is starting to rise and fish are starting to take the flies. Last night the river temperatures were in the low 60’s (F). This rain is a great boost for the month of August. I have seen there be sensational fishing from the rains in August so get out on the river this August or call and we’ll see if we can take you out on the river.

Mathew Doak of Doaks Fly Shop said there were fish taking the regular flies like the green machines and shady ladies.

Cains River is still fishing very well for some anglers. Gary Colford hooked several fish this week at the Brophy Pool and Moores Pool. Tom LeBlanc of Moncton fished the Sabbies Yesterday on the Cains and had no luck. He then went to the Main Miramichi where he hooked a few salmon. Glen Keenan hooked a nice salmon on the Miramichi on one of my bombers.

Flies to take with you that worked the past week are Green Machines, Undertakers, Shady Ladies, and bombers. I also fished the Mighty Quinn, a fly I got from Ralph Goodwin of Minto, NB. Salmon fishing on the Miramichi is in the transition stages

Atlantic salmon fishing on the Miramichi is in the transition stages of the 2011 season as most anglers are switching there flies and lines over to summer tackle. And as the spring salmon are still in the system on the lower stretches of the river the upper stretches they are very spotty and seemed of moved on downstream. There are not many fishermen out on the water above the Blackville area but there are a few fishermen fishing and still hooking salmon down river by Quarryville.

With all the rain the past two weeks it has kept the rivers very high and fishing very difficult to get to certain pools and lies you would normally fish wading, is the rain ever going to stop and give us a chance at the sea run trout. The sea trout should be along anytime now and let’s hope we get a crack at them before they sail through.

Why not drop into W.W.Doak & Sons for up to date fishing reports for the area and some of the finest quality fishing gear on the river. They are located in Doaktown, on Route 8 in the heart of the Miramichi river valley, right across the street from Tim Horton’s. Their just an hour from Fredericton, 50 minutes from Miramichi City, 100 minutes from Moncton and 2 hours from Saint John. Their open all year long, as well as all summer statutory holidays but remember we're always closed on Sunday.

Keith Wilson of Wilsons Sporting camps said there are still a few anglers around and a few fish but most have moved downstream from the area they fish. Keith said some anglers are catching a few trout and expects the sea run trout should be soon in the system.

Dereck Munn of The Ledges Inn said the season is coming to an end but the water was still at a good height and lots of fish. He had a few guest in on the weekend that caught fish from the 30-36 inch range. He said they were a lot of fish jumping and looks like they are moving downstream but with the amount of fish still showing on the upper area of Doaktown it should be still good for another week yet. Flies were various patterns such as Marabous and Rabbit Strips and black had been working best. There were also no reports of fresh salmon or sea trout.

Country Haven Lodge said anglers have been landing some great fish over the past week even though the numbers are not quite as good as they were in April. Fishermen are still doing very well in the lower stretches of the Main River. With the exception of the weather, so far this spring the fishing has made it worthwhile being on the river. After last weekend's rise in water levels the water has since been dropping and the fishing kept improving daily, in fact this weekend has been the best weekend since early April. Sometimes, the quality of the salmon landed later in May encourages the guides to say they enjoy fishing now more than April, especially with many anglers now using floating lines instead of the full sinking lines used in April - much more like summer and fall fishing. May can be a lot of fun when conditions and fish hold as they are doing this year.

Also the Atlantic Salmon Museum in Doaktown is hosting two Ladies Fishing Retreats. Their first one is on June 17^th to 20^th and the second is on September 10^th to 13^th. This is a great chance for all the women that can’t go with their husbands because they can’t fish, or your husband saying I wish you could fish so we can fish together. So check out this amazing retreat for the women to learn to fish and meet some new friends. Also get your River Guide to all the public water on the Main South West Miramichi. Great Fishing on the Miramichi

Opening week for Miramichi was very good and anglers were hooking their share of Atlantic salmon. And with the cold temperatures we are having fisherman were still on the water.

Many fishermen including myself was steady taking the ice off the guides on the rod as the line would freeze up on the first two days of the season.

And even though the weather was not the best the fish were taking flies of many patterns just the same. Flies like the Renous Special, Mickey Finn, Orange Blossom, Golden Eagle, Blue Smelt and the Christmas Tree were some of the favorites during the first week. Fisherman were hooking fish every way from wading from shore, long lining from the boat, trolling on many sections of the lower river.

The Upper stretches of the River around Boistown had very good fishing. Fisherman were hooking there share and many reaching their limit. Michael McKinnon was in the Boistown area and said it was very good fishing but very cold to say the least.

Down closer to Doaktown Wilsons Sporting Camps said the river was ideal height and color and was perfect for fishing. There were a large number of salmon in the mix. Keith expects the fishing to be very good again next week.

Down river near Upper Blackville fisherman were having great success too with many anglers catching their limit the first week each day. Salar Haven club on the Howard road were catching all there fish casting from boats.

The lower stretches of the river near the mouth of Cains river we were catching ours mostly trolling and a few on the cast. Most fish we had landed seem to be salmon in the 32 to 36 inch range.

All the fish looked very good and very silver in color, looked like they had a good winter in the Miramichi. Fly of choice was the Christmas Tree and Renous.

Down river in the Blackville area fisherman from Country Haven Lodge were hooking double digits and limiting out most days.

Byron Coughlan camp owner said one guide yelled to him on the porch that we can’t keep them of our hooks. He said that was music to a camp owners ears when he heard that, with many clients in from around the world made it good news.

Miramichi Renous Club was catching lots of fish on the lower section. Many anglers were catching fish in Quarryville area. Local guide Gerald Hallihan said fishing on the Renous was very good too.

The fishing was also very good on the North West Miramichi as many fisherman were hooking up. Many of the same flies were being used like the Renous Special, Christmas Tree and Golden Eagle to name a few.

Guide Kevin Gillespie said they boated 228 fish with 7 guys fishing at the lodge. The biggest fish was 39 inches and many big salmon being hooked. There were no signs of any smelts in the river as of Wednesday.

Local Shops like Curtis Miramichi River Outfitters, Georges Fly Shop, Herb Barry’s, Miramichi Surplus, Fredericton Outfitters, Trout Brook Fly Shop and Doaks were reporting having many fishermen in with good fishing all week.

With the first week in the books on the Miramichi I think the worry of the fish being out of the river early is over. They are here and in big numbers of them for you to get out on the river to catch.

Salmon move upstream

Salmon fishing on the Miramichi is going well and there is good signs of fish in the river. Water levels are very good and temperatures are in the low 50s F the past week. The river had a good rise from the last storm and some fresh salmon decided to make there move upstream so we can have our last chance into hooking a beautiful hook-bill.

Cains River hook-bills are well on there way as anglers at the mouth of Cains are hooking fish and seeing good signs of fish. Black Brook Salmon Club this week are catching a few fish and one hitting the 26-pound mark by Jeff Shearer.

<---Jeff also limit out the day before on the same fly, this fly was tied out of purple marabou on a 1/0 hook.

Other fishermen were hooking fish on GPs, LTs, green slimes, allies orange and purple and bombers, yes bombers. We are still getting fish on bombers in late afternoons. They are also hooking fish at the Island pool on the Cains about a mile up from the mouth.

Johnny Vickery of Bangor, Me. landed a few salmon this week on bombers at Pool 66. David Miller of South Carolina fished six days and hooked a nice 15-pounder on his last evening of fishing. He was using a purple ally shrimp Number 6.

Rob Strange landed a couple grilse on a under-taker at Pool 66. Anglers at Wade's Fishing Lodge was hooking a few fish and one fish was well over 25 pounds and was hooked on a Allies Cascade. Ken MacCloud of Nova Scotia landed a grilse on a GP.

Country Haven Lodge are hooking fish everyday in the Main SW and also on the Cains. Guide Gary Colford was hooking two or three fish a day at Moore's pool near Shinnickburn and saw many fish running through. Vickers Salmon Pools are hooking a few fish and Marty Vickers landed a grilse at the Washburn Island pool on a streamer pattern.

I fished the North West this week before the rise and had no luck. Water was low and had not raised up, sorry I have no report from the NW after the rain.

With periods of rain for today this should set up the rivers for the last week of the season pretty good. I expect to see many anglers on the Cains this weekend and keeping there fingers crossed for some big fish.

So get some good flies for the last run at them, and try those marabou patterns as they do work very well in this cold water.

Heavy rain hit the river

Colfords Miramichi Fishing Reports for Saturday July 24th. After heavy rains this week we finally got a change in river conditions to help out the fish. The river was 66 degrees this morning and about 2 or 3 feet higher than it was before the rain. Its still a bit dirty but clear enough to fish except they can be anywhere in this high water. Tides for the next few days are as follows.

I fished all morning and saw plenty of fish moving but could not get a one too bite our flies. We were fishing white tail green machines and butterflies. Saw a few anglers fishing and few boat fishing but very few locals fishing so that kinda tells you something! Maybe Sunday will be better with a little more drop in water, we`ll see. Also calling for rain 15-20ml on Sunday which will not hurt the system one bit!

Reels Screeching on Miramichi as the weather warms up.

The reels are still screeching on the Miramichi as fisherman from far and wide are hooking up with the silver leapers. But as the reels are heating up, so does the maritime weather as

temperatures reach the high 30's and putting the river temperature in places up to a high of 25C ( high 70's F). And with very hot weather over the next week, and very little rain in the forecast the fishing will start to slow down unless we get rain or cooler temperatures.

This week I fished again from the Blissfield area of the Main SW Miramichi river to lower Blackville at the Nash Bar pool.

I had some great story tellers and very talented fisherman from Nova Scotia fishing with me. Jim Gourlay President of Saltscapes Publishing and his dog Nickie, Bob Short who owns a B&B on the banks of the Margaree river and who was also Mr. Winchester for Canada for many years. And also long time guide, fishing, hunting and tourism ambassador Bill Bryson. We canoed and fished several pools in the area and saw many fish during our travels. As Bill Bryson lost one and rolled many he took it very easy on Jim and Bob as they both got a couple fish each this trip. They saw hundreds of fish and said they loved the canoe trip too all the pools they fished. My father had a family from North Carolina Dr. Ed Baker, Diana and son Charlie as they all hooked 1 fish each on there 3 day fishing trip.

Pools on the Main South West Miramichi from Boistown to Quarryville were fishing extremly well and many fish jumping and rolling.

Fisherman at the Mouth of Cains river were hooking fish and some double and as many as four fish on at once! Tyler Coughlan was fishing at The Foot Bridge Pool in Upper Blackville and said anglers landed over 20 fish last Friday. The Blackville Pool was fishing very well as local fisherman said they were seeing lots of grilse and a few nice salmon too. Anglers were starting to see some fish holding in the deeper water and in the brooks which has a little colder temperatures.

The Solar Haven Club was hooking lots of fish which were mostly grilse near Upper Blackville. Wilson's Sporting Camps above Doaktown had good fishing and saw lots of fish in all of there pools. Dry flies were the fly of choice later in the week which took a few nice salmon. The Hershey club had a great week hooking fish and the fly of choice was the green machine. The Black Brook Club also had a very good week of fishing and flies of choice were the green machine, undertaker and bombers. Curtis Miramichi River Outfitters said the fishing was very good and still very good canoeing and kayaking. Fly of choice was green machine, butterfly, shady lady and brown bombers.

Public Water activity was very good as Pool 66 action near the mouth of Cains River was hooking lots of grilse and salmon on mostly dry flies. The Quarryville pool was fishing very good with many anglers lined up from all over the province to fish the pool. The Stop Sign Pool was also fishing pretty good, but anglers said the fish were moving through very fast and that the pool needed a bit more water. The Grey Rapid pool which is a very fast water pool was fishing very well. You can find all of these public pools and many more very easy if you have the map book which the salmon museum sells in Doaktown. The public pools are all listed in red and it makes it very easy to locate by seeing each named pool on the SW Miramichi.

Other tributaries that were catching salmon were the Renous, North West Miramichi, Sevogle and Little South West Miramichi. No reports on the Cains River but I expect to hear that there is fish getting up over the shallow gravel bar at the Mouth of the river.

Most fishermen were hooking there fish on the top fly again the white tail green machine. Other flies like the undertaker, shady lady and a mixture of bombers are still very strong competitors.

Tip of the week: With the warm weather in the forecast for the next week and a few late showers fishermen should think when hooking a big fish. Maybe use a lighter leader so you could break him off after a few minutes of play. The hook will come out in a few days and the fish will swim to catch again someday. Also using this lighter leader will help in the clear water with smaller flies.

Opening Week of Spring Fishing On Miramichi

Fishing on the Miramichi was far from fun as the weather was not cooperating very well with reggit temperatures, rain, snow and hail hitting us most of the time as anglers were fishing.

Most boats on the lower stretch was catching fish as we passed them by and the nets out ready to get the fish in the boat and back into the water with a easy release from there barb-less hooks. The first day saw some huge fish from 32 to 40 inches in size. Also some trout in the mix from 10 to 16 inches or so. With water being so low most boats were turning to there trolling methods to cover more area of the river. The group landed 40 fish opening day of the season and most hooked on Renous & Christmas Tree patterns.

Monday April 19th:

This is Ron Falusy enjoying a rainy day on the Mighty Miramichi River after releasing a salmon that was hooked in the dorsal fin and took us 300 yards down stream. Ron also landed a salmon with the ado-pis fin punched and a tag in the dorsal fin.

River conditions are a little slow but there are fish around. We had the chance today to see several fish in the shallow water and they would not take any of our flies we threw at them. We did manage to land 2 in the morning and 3 in the afternoon. The fish we saw seem to be holding, lets hope the river will raise a bit and get them moving.

Flies of choice for the week were Christmas tree, Renous Special, Golden Eagle and Black Ghost. We were using 3/0 hooks with pinched barbs and it really made releasing them easy.

Miramichi Looking Up For The Start Of The Season

Colfords Miramichi Fishing Reports for the lower section of the Main South West Miramichi River.

No worries for gravel bars today on the Main SW Miramichi River with water being very high and a beautiful day with a high of 17 C and makes you want to be on the water fishing.

These photos from Doaktown to Quarryville are over the last couple days. My last post said that the fish would be out of the river by the 15th? I meant that for the Cains River and not the Miramichi. And who says I no for sure if there going to be out of the river? As we all no that Atlantic Salmon have a mind of there own and what we think we no of them it can change the next time. Maybe what keeps us fishing them.

Here is a photo of the river in Doaktown today as you can see very little ice about eh! Don't forget to stop at W.W. Doak for supplies when in Doaktown for Sage products.

Looking up from the Upper Blackville bridge and feeling the pain of wanting to go out there fishing!!!! Taking that sinking line and casting or trolling and feeling that line tighten when it grabs your fly over the long winter months of not being able too! I'm sure you feel the same way.

As for salmon flies I still have lots available and still taking orders for more if you want them ready for what looks to be and could be one of the best seasons to come!!! I have talked to older guides like Pat Brophy and Malcolm McCormack and they said the fish will no when to get out of the river and usually when the 15th of April gets here is when they start to make there way down the river. And said the water will come up as high as the ice along the shore line and yes its up that far now!

Heavy Rains Hits the Miramichi Area But Not before the Fish are in the Net.

Colfords Miramichi Fishing Reports For Oct 5th 2009 by Guide Rodney Colford. Its been a fun few days on the Miramichi for David Jap of Germany and Christian Stathis of New York. They both arrived in some of the lowest waters we had this 2009 season to leave to some of the highest in years for fall fishing on the Miramichi. It was a very good week fishing and the catching was not bad too, as you will see from the photo's. The above photo is davids 1st for Sunday of 4 fish hooked for the day.

This is a photo of the Moore's Pool on the Cains at 8:30 am Monday morning today. Notice the other pictures of the same pool and after just the night the seat in the photos. The water was raising almost 1 foot per hour all day for a while.Looking down stream this morning on the Cains River.

This photo of us on route to the Cains. This is guys dad was guiding from Country haven. They were from Maine and were enjoying there fishing on the Miramichi and Tributaries.

The weather over the next few days looks like more showers for the Miramichi area. Lets hope it does not amount to much and maybe things will pick up again.

I have this report from Bob Wallace: Good Morning Rodney, got back from my trailer at Hennessey's on Friday. With the rise of water from the Rain Sunday and Monday, made fishing better, then what it had been. I took a big Salmon on Monday Night on a #6 Cain's River Special and then took two more on the same fly Wednesday night. With the luck that I had, I thought with the rise of water, there would of been more Fresh run fish in the river then what we were seeing. I stopped before the bridge at Quarryville, to see how many fishermen were fishing, and there were a pile of them, so there must still be some fall run fish still in that area.

Another report from Larry Vanperson of Salor Haven fishing club: they were hooking fish and he landed a salmon. Another guy landed a 52 inch fish with them, he said they may have photos on a disposable camera. I will keep you posted if I get the photo.

My father Gary Colford landed a salmon last night on the Cains as well and in the lower parts of Moore's Pool.

The rain brought some high water to us and until dark this evening it was still raising. At times today it was rising at least a foot per hour. It must have raised 8 feet! I expect without rain and debris we may get into fish 24 to 48 hours. Or maybe in the morning EH! ha ha! You got to think positive!! My grand father always told me that? The river was very dirty all day with almost every cast hooking grass and sticks. But towards the end of the day things did look better.

I also want to note that most of the fishing is being done by Spey Rods and anglers are finding it so much easier in the high water conditions to cast. So when coming fishing if you have a Spey Rod please bring it with you and a single rod as well. I do not mention on my web site much about bringing Spey Rods to the Miramichi but I will update that information soon for the 2010 season.
