Bright Fish Hooked on Miramichi
Colfords Miramichi Fishing Report from the lower stretches of the South West Miramichi River.
Did I ever pick a morning to take of from fishing! Myself, Joel Kitchen and Dale Geldert was planning on taking a trip to the North West Miramichi. Something came up and I could not make the day trip, and oh yes this is what he caught! about a 12 to 15 pound salmon. He was using a number 6 white tale green machine single hook. He hooked the fish right next to Dale's Leg! Dale said he was quite surprised when the fish took off from beside him! Joel said the fish gave a great fight and felt like it was about 25 lb's and also jumped several times before Dale tailed the fish. Joel said that was the only fish they saw today.
This is Joel with one of many nice trout they hooked during the day.
The weather over the weekend looks like rain 10 to 20ml and then clearing on Sunday and very sunny the beginning of the week. Highs from 13C to 22C for the next seven days.
There was also reports of a few other bright silver fish being hooked on the NW Miramichi this week. They seem to be on schedule to other years anglers are saying. I expect to here of one being hooked on the Main SW Miramichi River very soon. Lets hope its tomorrow!
There was also a very good hatch of May Flies on tonight but there only seem to be small trout surfaces to them.
All for today.

Sea Trout on the Miramichi
Colfords Miramichi Fishing Report for the lower stretches of the Main South West Miramichi. Over the last week we have been getting a few trout. Such rivers like the Renous anglers have been picking up a few using fly and lures. The Bartholomew River has some trout being hooked on both fly and lures. Cains River is also producing trout on fly on the lower stretch from Shinickburn to the mouth of the river.
Zach with a 3 1/2 pound trout today.
There are a few trout being caught between the 2 to 6 pound range and several 1/2 pounders and up. Flies are small bombers, small trout flies like mosquitoes, black midges, and a blue wing olive. From size 14 to 8 singles.
Tommy Brennan with a 5 1/2 pound trout hooked on the Bartholomew River.
This is a couple anglers from Kedgwick area of NB and are fishing with me at Moores Pool on the Cains River.
The weather over the next few days looks good but calling for rain on Friday.
I have not saw any sign of fresh salmon yet on the SW Miramichi. Should be soon! I looked for shad tonight but did not see any sign.
If you have some photos of your fish that you want posted please email them to me at miramichifishingreports@hotmail.com or if you have a report of the river in your area or mine please let me know and I will post it asap for anyone.

Fishing May be Better for the Miramichi by Weekend
Miramichi Fishing Reports and Conditions for the lower stretches of the SW Miramichi River.
Fishing is very slow on the lower stretches of the river with only a few being landed. Joel Kitchen junior landed a grilse and salmon on a blue smelt above the mouth of Cains River today. There is still several smelts around on the lower stretches of the Miramichi.
I was getting a few on Tuesday night and scooped a fresh trout about 10 inches long! It was a nice trout very silver in color and no black in its mouth, so the fresh trout must be on there way. I did release this trout back.
This top photo is today on the Miramichi.
I am seeing a lot of salmon jumping so there are still a few springer's around for us to hook while were waiting for a silver, chrome Rocky Brook Salmon! Just can't wait!
This is from Tuesday trolling in front of the camp.
Weather
The water temperature was 56F. There is a few may flies on the water. Last night we also had black flies and moskidoes (mosquitoes) our miramichi slang!
The weather for the next few days will be from 12C to 20C .
Tonight Clear. Increasing cloudiness this evening with a few showers. Wind south 40 km/h gusting to 60. Low 12.
Friday Cloudy with 40 percent chance of showers early in the morning then a mix of sun and cloud. Wind southwest 20 km/h gusting to 40 becoming light in the afternoon.
Saturday Sunny. High 18.
Sunday Showers. Low 10. High 12.
Monday A mix of sun and cloud. Low plus 4. High 14.

Fiddle Heads
Nothing goes better with salmon and trout than Fiddle Heads. Fiddle heads are up in a few places where the sun gets at them and should be up very good by the weekend on the Miramichi area. I hear on other parts of NB they have been up for over a week.

Colfords Miramichi Fishing Report
Monday May 11th 2009,
River conditions for the SW Miramichi River lower stretches from Quarryville to Doaktown. Water levels are perfect on the lower stretches of the river. We are still seeing fish jumping so there is still time to get out and catch a few for you guys that are thinking its to late, its not. With smelts still hanging around salmon are feeding along the shores on the smelts and are taking the fly very poorly. In front of the camp tonight we saw a salmon scoot right in along the shore feeding on the smelts. I expect a few days when the smelts are gone the fish will take a bit better.
The weather for the next few days looks very good with highs of 12C to 19C with some rain in the forecast on Friday. Maybe with the warm days we will get some better fiddle head picking for the weekend.
Anglers are picking up a few black trout and some reports of them being around the 1 to 2 pound range in the tide water and also around the Blackville area.
My grandfather Malcolm McCormack in this first photo and long time guide of Wades Fishing Lodge fished last night at the Mouth of Cains River. He saw a few fish but only had a few hits and nothing hooked up.
My cousin & guide Nick Keenan who also was fishing with granddad last night and hooked a nice trout well over a pound and it managed to wiggle its way back in the water before getting his hands on it. Nick it would off been good for breakfast! Next time eh.
Also other guides on the river said there only catching a couple salmon a day and are saying the smelts are surely the cause of them not taking the fly near the Blackville area. They are hoping for the smelts to turn and head out again.
I will keep you posted on the smelt situation over the next few days. As for the fresh sea run trout I am thinking it will be more close to the end of the month before they make there way up the river. Usually that is the time they arrive and then the shad seems to get here around the beginning of the second week of June.

Weekend Looking Good for Miramichi River
Colfords Miramichi Salmon Fishing Reports from the South west Miramichi River by guide Rodney Colford. The last few days we are still seeing a lot of fish in the lower stretches of the river from Upper Blackville to Quarryville. Chances are very good for the weekend if your looking to hook up with a Atlantic Salmon.
Weather & Water Levels
Water levels are very good for this section of the river and very clear despite a little raise. The temperature is at 46 F and the barometric pressure is holding at 100. kpa for the last 10 to 12 hours. The weather for the next few days is from 8C to 22C for the Miramichi area.
There are reports of smelts up as far as the Blackville area. But I have yet to see them near the mouth of Cains River. Salmon are jumping all over the river from shore to shore on this section of the river, nice to see so many fish still in the system. Also some reports of trout being hooked near Quarryville but anglers said they appear to be black trout on there way out.
Long time friend and Marketing director Greg Davidson for Colfords Atlantic Salmon Fishing Ltd. and son Adam had a great day fishing with me on the lower stretches of Miramichi river by the Mouth of Cains.
Adam landed his first ever Atlantic Salmon using a golden eagle and said it was a little stronger than a brookie. Way to go Adam! Greg was trailing behind and the pressure was building to catch one!
Then I hooked one on a black ghost! and we were really making him sweat to catch one. We had a couple each before he finally got this beauty on a blue smelt pattern. Way to go Greg! but it was fun for Adam and myself to put the first few in the boat!!
We ended the morning with 9 fish and had several more hits.
All our fish were hooked trolling and full sinking lines out to the backing.
This is my son Zachery fishing trout at Black Brook Falls and his first time using a spin cast rod.
This is where Zach & Laura had no idea about fishing trout with bait. They said dad it would be much more easier fishing with the fly rod!! It may have been better with the fly rod? we never even had a strike with worms. They had a fun time and looking forward to the next time again.
To all the Fisher-Ladies that read my fishing reports Happy Mothers Day and tighter lines in the coming days fishing.

Water Rising again on Miramichi
For Colfords Miramichi Fishing Reports May 2nd 2009.
Fishing on the Miramichi was awesome up and down the river yesterday! But with the rise in water over night it has made the river very dirty and leaving unlimited places to hook up today. The lucky ones that could find a place near the mouth of a brook were finding it more clean to fish.
Rob Strange of Fredericton managed to land a salmon today but said the water was very dirty in the Blackville area and decided to quit early. He also said he landed two from the bank last night.
There was a few other anglers with fish on but most were saying the same thing that water was to dirty with grass and debris catching the fly.

Fishing very good on the Miramichi River
Miramichi Fishing Reports and Conditions for the lower stretches of the SW Miramichi River.
Although there is heavy rain hitting the Miramichi River area we are at the moment having awesome fishing from the Lower stretches to the Middle stretches of the river. Its been raining very hard for the best part of the day and more expected tomorrow. This should bring water levels up again. If it does not exceed to high the fishing may stay good for the weekend.
Fishing over the last couple days were very good from the Upper Blackville Bridge to Quarryville. Doaktown anglers were also hooking fish in the Bogan's where some clearer water was available. It was clearly visible that the fish were on the take! when you see nets out on almost every boat as heading back to camp for lunch! It gets you very excited. Cains River is still fishing very well on the lower stretches up as far as Sabbies River.
Our group was using Golden Eagles and Smelts with no flash the last few days. Most were being hooked on a cast and a very long line way out into the backing. Trolling was also working with a line just at your backing and were taking very close to the bushes along the shore lines.
Weather
The water temperature is 38 F Very Cold! With temperatures from 10 C to 18 C over the next 7 days on the Miramichi. The barometric pressure is still falling at 100.24 kPa. For water levels go to http://scitech.pyr.ec.gc.ca/waterweb/fullgraph.asp
Trout Season
Trout Season is under way today. If your out on the brooks and small streams, Please be cautious of the high water and try to have a fishing buddy with you if you can. Let us know about your catch and I will post it for you. Good Luck!
