From the Lower Stretches of the South West Miramichi River for Colfords Atlantic Salmon Fishing. Warm weather the past week has kept the water temperatures in the lower 70 degree F to a high of 80F. This is very dangerous conditions for the salmon as most fish are held up at the mouths of brooks and small streams.
The mouth of Cains River area alone has about a 1500 fish holding and other places like the mouth of Bartholomew has a couple hundred. Some fish are holding tight to a few shore lines at some of our pools on the lower stretches, where some big rocks lye in the pools and springs flow in from above.
The weather the next few days is more heat until Sunday! But then we are expected too get heavy rains from 30 to 40ml on Sunday and that should turn the river on! and with all the fish laying around they should be on the move & in the taking mood and hopefully you will hook into some great fishing. Temperatures look good from Sunday on from the low 20's and down into the teens for Wednesday, Thursday will be 14C for the daily high expected. Maybe this Hurricane Bill will help the fish get some better conditions on the rivers of New Brunswick.
I have not been fishing the past few days in these warm conditions but some anglers have been trying there luck. Most guys I have talked too have not had much luck, and most have not had a fish for the past 3 days. The water is almost at a perfect height for the lower stretches. I will keep you posted over the weekend for changes on the river for the beginning of the week.

Miramichi, On The Water
Colfords Miramichi Fishing Reports
On the water with guide Rodney Colford from the banks of the Lower Stretches of the South West Miramichi River. The past few days there's been lots of fish and big fish on the lower stretches of the river. Areas from the mouth of Cains River down have saw several big fish and some being hooked up to the 30 pound mark. Water is still pretty high but the wading at pools are improving very well and pools are starting to appear to there normal appearance.
Weather
The weather for the next week is going to be some scorching temperatures! Friday is reported to feel like 37C (99F) and way into next week with same temperatures. Chances of some thunder showers during the weekend at times. The barometric pressure is rising 101.77kpa. For tides check the links on the side.
A Few Tips for the Hot Weather
With hot weather now approaching the Miramichi and tributary rivers, anglers should be very careful of landing fish in hotter temperatures. If released too soon they will go belly up and not recover, so please be careful and take care releasing them back into the river.
One way too help in the hot weather is get out before the water temperature gets above the 70F mark, (like this morning the river was in the mid 60's and tonight it got too 71F), or even break them off after a few minutes playing the fish and in a couple three days the hook will come out, or pinch your barbs for another help too the fish. Try fishing rods that are stiffer and they will too help bring a fish in quicker. I know some fisherman likes using 6 & 7 weights but its easier to recover a sore arm casting a heavier rod than loose a salmon too playing it too long. Just a few tips for the hotter conditions approaching us on the Miramichi River this weekend.
Catching Fish
Now on too some reports of fish being landed! The last couple days things were starting to slow a bit but we were still hooking a few. I had Doug Underhill's Daughter Carrie Underhill and her boy
friend Adrien from South Africa out fishing Tuesday. We saw several fish in the morning but only rolled one fish. That evening we started around 5:00PM and we fished the Vickers Bar and saw some fish but they would not take. Above us Joel Kitchen and Rick Trenholm was fishing and they just finished landing there third on one of my brown bombers. They yelled out for us to come up and give that pool a try. I was not long pulling the anchor to get Carrie and Adrien into some fish. We got in the spot Joel was anchored and put the brown bombers to work, we were not long raising some fish! Carrie raised a salmon and did not set the hook fast enough, I yelled pull and she did but as Carrie was not 
familiar with dry fly fishing for a few years she only pulled on the line and had not pulled the rod up too set the hook. She raised about six fish before she figured out to pull the rod back and set the hook! She then hooked into a salmon about 10 pounds. She played the fish for about 5 minutes and as it got close to the boat the hook pulled out. I lost a salmon after one jump on a killer whisker bomber just after Carrie. Adrien lost a salmon after two jumps on a brown bomber using my 15 foot Loop Spey rod.
Other fish landed in the area was Rick Trenholm with 3 salmon over the past 3 days. Joel Kitchen with 5 salmon and 1 grilse and still has the horse shoe hidden somewhere! Danny Stewart of Alpine Lodge in Blackville landed 4 fish the past couple days on killer whisker bombers with split wings. Ashley Hallihan and friends hooked a few above us at Wades Pools on bombers. Larry Porter of Hershey Club across the river from our Lodge said fishing was slow at there pool and have yet too hook a fish this week. He said there were several fish showing but would not take there flies. Donald Colford said they were hooking a few fish near the mouth of Cains River and one was 30 pounds, there first 30 pounder of the season.
There are still reports of fish on the Cains River, pools like the Brophy pool had fish, Underhill's Camps said there was fish there and they had also hooked a few last weekend, other pools like Campbell's pool had fish where Author Peter Clark fishes and looks after, Buttermilk, Salmon Brook, and Sabbies had reports of fish.
Flies Of Choice
Were Brown Bombers white tails and brown hackles, green machines white tail and brown hackle and very slim bodies with hackle palmered back towards the rear to stay under the current better, SameThing Murray's were great near the mouth of Cains. Mostly Salmon being Hooked on the Miramichi
Colfords Atlantic Salmon Fishing for the lower stretches of the South West Miramichi River 
August 10th 2009. There is know way around it and we are getting very use to saying high water on the Miramichi River. Yes! the river is still very high for the lower section off the river. But the good news is that there are good numbers off fish and most pools (if you where they are from all the high water) have fish holding in them.
The past few days we have been hooking mostly salmon and not seeing to many grilse. Good friend Joel Kitchen still has that horse shoe in his vest and the last 3 days has 11 salmon and two being grilse out of the 11. Most of Joel's fish were hooked at our two lower pools the Half Bar Pool
and Vickers Bar Pool. Rick Trenholm, Joels son in-law also landed four fish the past 3 days at the same pools. They were fishing all from boats and hooked there fish on green machines and bombers. Jason Curtis also has been hooking a few fish at Wades Fishing Lodge just above our pools. His client landed four today using green machines. Jason had four big fish the day before yesterday all estamated over 20 pounds each he told me, and the fly again was a green machine and all from casting from the boat. The same went for me tonight, I started fishing tonight around 7:00PM and I landed a 15 pound salmon using a number 4 white tail green machine. I raised a few more but they would not hook up. Rick Trenholm netted the fish for me and said he was rolling a few 
above me from his boat also on a red butt green machine. I rolled another as well on a christmas tree bomber number 2 hook.
Fisherman at the mouth of Cains River were hooking fish and said they were seeing most of the fish on the Cains River side. One guy said they saw several fish jumping up in the Cains. Good reason why there jumping on that side I would think.
The fish we were catching all week had no sign of sea lice and were dark in color but very aggresive when they took the fly. These salmon were out into the backing before you could say salmon!
The water was in the low 60's this morning at 62F and this evening 67F below the mouth of Cains River. The weather for the rest of the week looks good except for a few showers but the temperatures are in the low 20's until Friday where they are reporting some hot temperatures up into the 30's! Maybe we will see some summer!

Miramichi Fishing Reports for August
Miramichi Fishing Reports for Colfords Atlantic Salmon Fishing August 2009. The past week has been very hard fishing for most fisherman again with high water conditions. Rain and more rain has been the topic for the past couple weeks on the Miramichi river in New Brunswick, Canada. The lower stretches has been very slow fishing and also the wading was very difficult for most pools. The past week boat fishing was the only way you could throw a line.
Yesterday anglers near the mouth of Cains River was starting to pick up a few fish. Ian Fortune of Blackville landed a salmon on a brown bomber with white ends last evening. This morning I was fishing with Doug Underhill & Jacques Heroux and we stopped at a public pool. We were not even out of the boat when we saw our first salmon jump in the middle of the pool. As Doug fished his way down the run he rolled a fish on a Sid's Green Machine. We saw a couple more jump and Doug said its your turn Rod. I made a few cast and rolled a salmon. I then made my way down a little further and rolled another while using Doug's fishing rod. I then casted a few more times and a fish struck the fly. We fished a few more pools and saw several fish but none hooked up. Jacques rolled one at the half bar pool below Wades. There was a few fished landed also at pool 66 in Howard near the mouth of Cains River.
The fishing for the rest of the week and into the weekend should start picking up with the drop in water over the next few days. The weather is looking good and not much rain in the forecast too help. The temperatures are in the low 20's for all week except for tomorrow being 29C. The water temperature was 67F this morning and yesterday it got up too 76F. The high tide is 1.46 meters and a full moon tomorrow night should bring some new fish into the system.
Flies of choice the past few days were brown bombers, green machines and a Renous Special on the lower section of the river. I also have been seeing fish all over the place on the river, so you may just hook that fish two feet from the bank or someplace where you would not normally even think to try! So give them places a try in this high water and just maybe hook into one.

Justen Charron Lands His first Atlantic Salmon On Miramichi
Miramichi Fishing Reports
Atlantic Salmon Fishing on the South West Miramichi River. With heavy rains the last couple days the water was starting to raise last evening. The temperature was very good at 63F and still fairly clear to fish. There was starting to be some grass and branches floating down stream as we were fishing though and I expect it will be very difficult to wade in most places on the
lower stretches of the river in the morning.
There was lots of fish showing today as well on the lower stretches of the main south west Miramichi river. Justin and Charles Charron of St. George NB fished with me yesterday. They raised a few the night before at Hogan's Bar but did not hook up. The next morning we hit the river around 7:30 and canoed 4 miles up stream to our first pool of the morning. The water was good for this first pool but we did not see a fish move. As we were heading down stream to another pool we saw Stan Tropze of Salar Haven fishing club landing a salmon. I shut down my engine on the canoe as we drifted slowly by trying not too disturb Stan's fish that Mark Madore was netting for him, I asked him what he hooked it on and he said a green machine. Another mile down stream there was a fisherman fishing at a public pool and he said he had hooked one and rolled a couple more. We decided to stop behind my house at pool 66 and give it a try, there was know one around fishing except for a few guys at the mouth of Cains River. There were lots of fish rolling and jumping all through out the pool and as far as the eye could see down stream. We saw Jason & Jennifer Curtis fishing out in front of the Wades and Jennifer landed two salmon on a dry fly and Jason one grilse.
After seeing them land there fish I saw Justen roll one on a green machine! Charles and I was above Justen working on another salmon rolling about 30 feet from us. It was not long before we
heard the reel scream and Justen yell out! I got one! I ran for the net and this fish was jumping like crazy! Justen all most had the fish in, about 20 feet from the net or so and he said it's just there? I could not see the fish in the dark water and did not want to take any chances on him loosing this salmon, And I knew this was only the second salmon he had on and lost his first one a previous year fishing. I said to Justen that this salmon could take you out into the backing yet, even though it was close to the net! lol! And I was right on the money and before we knew it he was way out in the backing and we were chasing him down stream. Justen said he did not even know he had a third color of backing on his reel that is how far he took off. Justen got it under control and I netted his first ever Atlantic Salmon weighing 15 pounds on a green butt green machine that he tied himself.
Rick Colford landed a grilse and rolled a few more on a number 4 green machine. Joel Kitchen rolled a few he said but did not get one to hook up. Judy Berrasi of Maine landed a grilse on our Vickers bar Pool. Lenard Connors of Upper Blackville had rolled a few but no hook ups.
The weather is looking like rain again for Sunday evening and into Monday with more amounts of 20ml to raise the river even more. Then they are saying sunny with showers the rest of the week. We will not be complaining about no water no time soon one would think.
