Anglers hooking fish this week on the Miramichi

Colfords Miramichi Fishing Report for the Lower Stretches of the Main South West Miramichi River.

Prime fishing season is now upon us and the cooler temperatures are starting with them. Now all we need is our fall runs of salmon too get us hooked on the fall fishing! But even though the fishing is slow on most parts of the river some fisherman are hooking or rolling fish. Most fish are very dark and little sign of the fall hook bills are being seen.

I fished the Pool 66 mostly all week, and while most of the other pools seem to be empty too fish or fish running through Pool 66 had hundreds of fish holding. And after many many flies being thrown the angler gets lucky and hooks into one!

Fish Catches
Anglers hooking fish this week were Ross Brophy with a couple grilse, Damir Sahic with a grilse, Zachery Colford with a grilse, Bobby Stulze lost a grilse, John Colford also lost a grilse, Danny Colford landed a 15 pound salmon, Gary Colford landed a salmon, Tom & Mark from the Edmunston area lost a salmon and rolled a few more, Louis Cormier and his buddy landed a couple salmon at Hogan's Bar, Emil Sahic lost a grilse, also fisherman from the Black Brook Club had a few grilse and a couple huge salmon one being a 2nd in the last two weeks hitting the 38 pound mark! and another being 25 pound. Both fish this week 25 and 38 were caught by two sisters at the club. So on this little stretch of the river this week the woman were the top anglers. This is a photo of Emil Sahic with a grilse on.

I was also up to Salmon Brook this week and saw several fish there but again no takers. The Brophy Pool on the Cains River was also holding fish and some anglers had rolled a few on dry flies. Moores Pool on the Cains had a few fish holding and we managed too roll one on a bomber.

This is a photo of the famous Pool 66 and anglers waiting there turn at many hundred of fish lying in the section of cool water that comes in from the Cains River and Black Brook. As you can see anglers laughing and telling fish stories to each other and some that just met for the first time. This is a great pool to try when the fishing is slow and many lies that are priceless!

This is a photo of a Osprey that flew into this dead tree and collapsed and hung upside down for at least 3 minutes before coming too and flying away.

Other River Reports

Doug Underhills Miramichi Fishing Report for Thursday
We've turned another page in the calendar and are headed for the home-stretch of the angling season. However, the fall runs have yet to appear. The heavy rains last weekend did not affect the Miramichi system as it did others. Read More.
Country Haven Report
Byron (Byzie) Coughlan's clients hooked a couple fish this week on the Miramichi river. Read More.

Flies of Choice
Bombers of every color pretty much but the blue with white ends and brown hackle seem to be the best. Green machines number 4's were working good with a green or red but and some flash. Some fish were rolling too Ally Shrimp patterns. You should soon see the green slime start to work too. One fish was hooked on a yellow subermarine with white tail, very simular too the white tail green machine.

Weather & River Conditions
As you can see in this photo of anglers fishing in the morning fog the fall weather has approached us. The weather for the next week will be from 16 C to 22 C and lows of down to 7 C. There is some rain expected (10 ml) for the Friday the 11th. The river level from my experience is getting very low and even though the lower stretches requires low water it really needs a raise in the level to help the fish and the pools up stream. Tides for the next week please check the link to the right and you can find the predictions. The water temperatures are in the low 60's which is very good.

That's all for the weekend and hope too have better reports in the next few days on the river.

Colfords Miramichi Fishing Reports for the lower stretches of the Main SW Miramichi. The fishing over the past week had been very good except for the last couple days. With the raise in water last week, it had the fishing taking but once the water dropped off they really seem to be in a case of lock jaw! We've tried everything in the fly box and have not hooked a fish for two days. We raised a few on blue bombers and
orange ones. The fish we caught in the last week were a mix of salmon and grilse but all except 1 or 2 seemed very fresh. Lets hope a fresh run will start for September soon. I have a few photos of the weeks fishing from pool 66 near the mouth of Cains River.

I have canoed as far as the Upper Blackville Bridge this week and saw very few fish holding in the pools I fish. Most times I see several as I pass through the pools from the boat and they are not to be seen or very few at least.
This is Christian Staffis of Manhatten, NY on the Renous River.

Most fish seem to be holding at the junctions like the Cains River and Bartholomew area's to name a couple places.

This is a great shot of Rick Colford near the Mouth of Cains River landing a salmon with Zachery Colford netting.

The fishing season ends on October 15th this year, some anglers were wondering.

This is a photo of a young angler Alex Colford and he had about 5 or 6 fish for the week.

The water temperature the past week had been in the low 60's and the water height had been normal for the lower section of the river. Today it got to be 70 F after a very warm day. We saw two fish landed all day near the mouth of Cains River.

This is Zach Colford with his 7th fish of the week.

Last minute cancellation! I have a prime week available at the last notice for four rods on the week off September 25th to October 1st. Please call if your interested for a prime time fishing on the Miramichi & Cains River Pools. This is a full catering package that includes lodging, 3 meals, guides, boats and private pools. Email for more information.

Sorry for the late reports I will try my best to have them out to you faster for the fall fishing.

Fishing Picking Up On Miramichi

Thursday morning started out very very well on the lower stretches of the South West Miramichi River! The water was in the low 60's and the fish were taking, yes taking. The river is at a very good height for the lower stretches from the mouth of Cains River to Quarryville.

Photo Zachery Colford landing his salmon.

This photo is John Colford with a nice salmon this morning at pool 66, he landed it on a green machine. Peter Beresford landed a grilse and raised a few more on a white tail green machine. This is Donald Colford with a nice salmon his sport Bill Knobblock caught near the mouth of Cains River also on a green machine.

Zachery Colford landed 2 salmon and a grilse and raised a few more all on dry flies, one salmon was close to 30 pounds. I landed a salmon and grilse on a Orange Bomber, it was all orange deer hair with white ends and brown hackle on a number 2/9671 hook. There was a lady fishing at a club that landed a 38 pound salmon below the mouth of Cains. Caleb Dunn of Salisbury landed a grilse on a bomber.

The weather for the next week is looking very fishable with lows of 5 Celsius for night time highs and high from 12 to 23 over the next week. There calling for a bit of rain on the weekend which will be an extra little help to us fisherman for hooking up. For the tides check Miramichi River Tides.

Last minute cancellation! I have a prime week available at the last notice for four rods on the week off September 25th to October 1st. Please call if your interested for a prime time of fishing on the Miramichi & Cains River Pools. This is a full catering package that includes lodging, 3 meals, guides, boats and private pools. Call 506 843 6031 or email for more information.

Hope this report helps you out for the upcoming weekend on the South West Miramichi River. The cool weather is starting here and so are the fish it seems. Lets hope there is a good fall run this season.

Miramichi Expecting Rain Sunday and Cooler Temperatures

From the Lower Stretches of the South West Miramichi River for Colfords Atlantic Salmon Fishing. Warm weather the past week has kept the water temperatures in the lower 70 degree F to a high of 80F. This is very dangerous conditions for the salmon as most fish are held up at the mouths of brooks and small streams.

The mouth of Cains River area alone has about a 1500 fish holding and other places like the mouth of Bartholomew has a couple hundred. Some fish are holding tight to a few shore lines at some of our pools on the lower stretches, where some big rocks lye in the pools and springs flow in from above.

The weather the next few days is more heat until Sunday! But then we are expected too get heavy rains from 30 to 40ml on Sunday and that should turn the river on! and with all the fish laying around they should be on the move & in the taking mood and hopefully you will hook into some great fishing. Temperatures look good from Sunday on from the low 20's and down into the teens for Wednesday, Thursday will be 14C for the daily high expected. Maybe this Hurricane Bill will help the fish get some better conditions on the rivers of New Brunswick.

I have not been fishing the past few days in these warm conditions but some anglers have been trying there luck. Most guys I have talked too have not had much luck, and most have not had a fish for the past 3 days. The water is almost at a perfect height for the lower stretches. I will keep you posted over the weekend for changes on the river for the beginning of the week.

Miramichi, On The Water

Colfords Miramichi Fishing Reports

On the water with guide Rodney Colford from the banks of the Lower Stretches of the South West Miramichi River. The past few days there's been lots of fish and big fish on the lower stretches of the river. Areas from the mouth of Cains River down have saw several big fish and some being hooked up to the 30 pound mark. Water is still pretty high but the wading at pools are improving very well and pools are starting to appear to there normal appearance.

Weather
The weather for the next week is going to be some scorching temperatures! Friday is reported to feel like 37C (99F) and way into next week with same temperatures. Chances of some thunder showers during the weekend at times. The barometric pressure is rising 101.77kpa. For tides check the links on the side.

A Few Tips for the Hot Weather
With hot weather now approaching the Miramichi and tributary rivers, anglers should be very careful of landing fish in hotter temperatures. If released too soon they will go belly up and not recover, so please be careful and take care releasing them back into the river.
One way too help in the hot weather is get out before the water temperature gets above the 70F mark, (like this morning the river was in the mid 60's and tonight it got too 71F), or even break them off after a few minutes playing the fish and in a couple three days the hook will come out, or pinch your barbs for another help too the fish. Try fishing rods that are stiffer and they will too help bring a fish in quicker. I know some fisherman likes using 6 & 7 weights but its easier to recover a sore arm casting a heavier rod than loose a salmon too playing it too long. Just a few tips for the hotter conditions approaching us on the Miramichi River this weekend.

Catching Fish
Now on too some reports of fish being landed! The last couple days things were starting to slow a bit but we were still hooking a few. I had Doug Underhill's Daughter Carrie Underhill and her boy friend Adrien from South Africa out fishing Tuesday. We saw several fish in the morning but only rolled one fish. That evening we started around 5:00PM and we fished the Vickers Bar and saw some fish but they would not take. Above us Joel Kitchen and Rick Trenholm was fishing and they just finished landing there third on one of my brown bombers. They yelled out for us to come up and give that pool a try. I was not long pulling the anchor to get Carrie and Adrien into some fish. We got in the spot Joel was anchored and put the brown bombers to work, we were not long raising some fish! Carrie raised a salmon and did not set the hook fast enough, I yelled pull and she did but as Carrie was not familiar with dry fly fishing for a few years she only pulled on the line and had not pulled the rod up too set the hook. She raised about six fish before she figured out to pull the rod back and set the hook! She then hooked into a salmon about 10 pounds. She played the fish for about 5 minutes and as it got close to the boat the hook pulled out. I lost a salmon after one jump on a killer whisker bomber just after Carrie. Adrien lost a salmon after two jumps on a brown bomber using my 15 foot Loop Spey rod.

Other fish landed in the area was Rick Trenholm with 3 salmon over the past 3 days. Joel Kitchen with 5 salmon and 1 grilse and still has the horse shoe hidden somewhere! Danny Stewart of Alpine Lodge in Blackville landed 4 fish the past couple days on killer whisker bombers with split wings. Ashley Hallihan and friends hooked a few above us at Wades Pools on bombers. Larry Porter of Hershey Club across the river from our Lodge said fishing was slow at there pool and have yet too hook a fish this week. He said there were several fish showing but would not take there flies. Donald Colford said they were hooking a few fish near the mouth of Cains River and one was 30 pounds, there first 30 pounder of the season.

There are still reports of fish on the Cains River, pools like the Brophy pool had fish, Underhill's Camps said there was fish there and they had also hooked a few last weekend, other pools like Campbell's pool had fish where Author Peter Clark fishes and looks after, Buttermilk, Salmon Brook, and Sabbies had reports of fish.

Flies Of Choice
Were Brown Bombers white tails and brown hackles, green machines white tail and brown hackle and very slim bodies with hackle palmered back towards the rear to stay under the current better, SameThing Murray's were great near the mouth of Cains. For more info on any of these flies check out Jerry Doaks tackle shop at wwdoak
