Season ending on the Miramichi soon

With another season of salmon fishing almost in the books on the Miramichi, a few salmon have started to tug on the fly.

River conditions are very good overall and the little bump in the level of the river didn't effect conditions.

Temperatures are very cool in the mornings on the river with frost the last few days. River temperatures are in the low 50's and dipping into the 40's (F) some days.

The last few days I have been fishing with a few guys from Outdoor Canada and Serge Collins of tourism NB and we hooked over 8 fish and landed 5 at the Ledges Inn pools. Fly of choice was the marabou leech and samething Murray. The last week we have had several hookups at the lodge. Dr. Scott Boley limit out with four salmon on one of my #14 double green machines. Ralph Goodwin limit out using his Mintonion pattern. Tom Kleeman landed 4 salmon and his brother John Kleeman also landed a salmon. Fly of choice was green machine and ally shrimps. Diana Baker landed a grilse at big hole brook on a brown bug.

Gary Colford said the Cain's River raised about 10 inches from the rain on Monday night. The level is perfect and fish were biting Wednesday morning as a client landed a 14 lb salmon on a ally shrimp.

Country haven lodge has several fishermen in and hooking a few fish. They were hooking fish on many pools and most tributaries of the Miramichi system. Fly of choice was ally shrimps, green slimes, same thing Murray's.

Keith Wilson of Wilson's Sporting Camps said finally some good news for Miramichi anglers. The heavy cloud cover yesterday must have been the secret ingredient because the fishing sure turned on in this area of the river. We had 22mm of rain in the headwaters last night resulting in a slight rise this morning so conditions are ideal for both the Miramichi and Cains. It looks like we will wrap up the 2013 season on a high note after-all.

Fishermen around the mouth of Cains river are hooking a few fish. Conditions are a little higher than normal for this area and will likely not be down much lower this season for fishing.

Dan Bullock of Bullocks Lodge said the last few days have been very productive at the lodge. Several nice fish have been caught. Flies that have been productive include: Tippet Shrimp (again this week), Undertakers w/ Crystal flash in wing, RBM's (various versions). Last Thursday night saw Bill Jakobus from Vermont land three fish including one 15lbs and one in the upper 20's. Water levels are gradually dropping, however pools are in excellent shape with lots of fish showing. Spey rods and regular one hand rods are of choice. 3 of Dans photos are below.

As the season is winding down check out the local fly shops in many areas on route to fishing with great fall specials.

Tip for the last few days under the fall conditions are, wear warm cloths, try every fly in your box because you never know which one they'll take this time of year big or small, and last don't be shy to try a sinking tip even though it's difficult to cast.

I would like to thank all my readers for taking the time to read my reports this season. It was my pleasure to help out and give you what I see on the river as I see it.

Anglers hooking up on the Miramichi

At least the fish started showing some appreciation this week on the Miramichi and anglers starting hooking and seeing some fish.

Country Haven Lodge said another rain and yet another raise in water for September. Seeing some fish over the weekend but not the numbers we should have for September.
Tuesday they landed 3 salmon on the Cains and 4 on the Renous. Also landed 2 salmon and a grilse on the North West Miramichi.

Around the mouth of Cains river are fishermen are hooking a couple each day. Guide Eddy Colford of Black Brook Salmon Club said most fish are jumping in the middle of the river and some are bright looking fish. He also said the Cains was fishing good.

Conditions at the Ledges Inn are improving. The last few days there have been more and more fish about. Some of of anglers are landing a few fish each day since Tuesday.

Fishermen at Big Hole Brook are seeing some fish but not big numbers. Mostly 3 to 4 fish per day with four fishermen fishing.

Sutters Salmon Club in the Doaktown area also has been picking up a few salmon over the last couple days.

Keith Wilson of Wilson's Sporting Camps said angling is picking up with a few fish being landed and a some jumping. The river is dropping very good. The Cains is looking very good with a little higher than normal conditions and should be good on the upper stretch in the next few days.

On the upper stretches in the Boistown area of the Main SW Miramichi, Dan Bullock said the weather is looking very good over the next few days for fishing.
It was a challenging yet successful week at Bullocks Lodge with everyone in Camp hooking fish. Hot flies included Glitter Bear, Cuttysark, Celtic Beauty, Guiding Lady, Green Slime and some action to the GPS -Golden Pheasant Spey. So pretty much a mixed box of flies. Dan said the water is shaping up to be perfect as we speak.

River temperatures are in the low 50's to high 50's. Sink tips are being used by a few and a selection of sizes of flies.

For daily reports always check the local fly shops in the area like WW Doak in Doaktown, and Curtis River Outfitters, Trout Brook Fly Shop on the NW and George's Fly Shop in Renous.

With very good reports up and down the river, fall is shaping up for salmon fishing. So with some positive reports on the fishing, tight lines from the Miramichi.

Making Memories Fishing The Miramichi

Having a laugh at the Ledges Inn with the Campbell group
Many memories are made salmon fishing on the Miramichi river, and fall salmon fishing is a time when many are made. So many of those memories are not from catching several fish, as it is to that particular fish that may have caused a heart stopping moment that you'll never forget for the rest of your life. For many, just to be there on such a beautiful river, watching the foliage change, perhaps seeing a deer or a moose come down to the rivers edge for a drink, having a beaver swim only a few feet from you, before slapping his tail to say this is my turf. All this and more is part of Atlantic salmon fishing on the Miramichi river.

Ledges Real Time Monitoring

Keith Wilson of Wilson's Sporting Camps said they saw a few older fish and catching a few too, but know sign of any fall run. Keith said they usually see the fall run any-time from mid to late September and with all the high water hoping a bit sooner.

Martin Depuis and myself on the Cains Wednesday

The past week at The Ledges Inn was very slow with lots of rain and high water. We had a couple days that we were blown out and decided not to even fish. We started seeing a few fish on Monday, but was Tuesday before Veteran Guide Lloyd Lyons broke the ice when his client landed a grilse on a Yellow Ally Shrimp at the Car Pool. Guide Andrew Anthony ran the Cain's with a couple guest but had no hook-ups but saw several fish. Andrew said there we're many anglers fishing the Cains around Sabbies River and Salmon Brook. Notice the picture above from the Real Time Monitoring System. Normal conditions this is high in dry on land. Please check this site out at Miramichi River Environmental Assessment Committee if you haven't already.
Fishing Moores Pool Wednesday on the Cains
Country Haven Lodge on the lower stretch of the Miramichi said fishing was slow with the raise in water. They started hooking a few fish on Monday and a few more on Tuesday. Cains was treating them very good with a few fishermen.

Linda Warren of Princeton, MA
Dan Bullock of Bullock's Lodge in Boistown said angling was very challenging the past week. Dan said they had some success before the raise in water hooking a few fish and rolling many on Glitter Bears. Dan also said a monster male hook-bill 38 inches in length was landed by Linda Warren of Princeton, MA. Linda may have won her battle with this monster salmon, but her Sage Z-Axis was not so lucky, and may need to have some warranty work done on it. Fly of choice for Linda was created and dressed by her husband Bob Warren called the Cuttysark. That's a great memory Linda WTG! Dan also said he hopes we received our quota of rain for the season and expects good fishing in the coming days.

Fishing around the Mouth of Cain's River area is very slow with very high conditions. Anglers are picking up a few and seeing a few fish but conditions was very slow overall. River levels are at least 3 feet above normal conditions for this area of the river.

Remember back in July when we asked for more water to work with, when our river was low and warm. Well we got that wish since late July and that is a memory that will be with us for awhile to come.

http://www.mreac.org
Miramichi river levels were very high over the weekend again and looked more like spring fishing than fall fishing conditions. Conditions have improved and looks very promising heading into the weekend. There are a few fish around and may be even a few that have been hanging around in some pools way to long. Temperatures are awesome hoovering in the 50's (F).

So what excuses do we have this time salmon fishing, we can't say if the water was lower we could work with it. We could have more fish in the system for sure, but there are fish around to hook. Time is running out for 2013 salmon season and with know more time for excuses, it's time to get your lines tight.

A Few Fall Salmon on the Move

Reports are coming in with what looks to be a few fall fish making their way up the Miramichi River around the Quarryville to Blackville area on Tuesday. Not a massive run of fish yet, but this could be the start of a September run.

Durck Dewinter
Starting at the lower section of the Miramichi with Byron Coughlan of Country Haven Lodge. Byron said they picked up a few fish this past week. Byron also saw some fish on the tides on Monday and Tuesday which were jumping in front of the Lodge and were making their way up river. Gary Colford hooked 3 salmon on the Cains on a undertaker on Tuesday.

Salmon fishing near the mouth of Cains River has been fair with the odd fish landed. Black Brook Salmon Club were landing a few salmon each day and hooking a few on their pools on the Cains.
Cliff Marr

The Miramichi Salmon Club landed some salmon on Monday in their pools on green butt bear hairs. And had a few more at Big Hole Brook on Tuesday. Guide Dickie Story of Big Hole Brook said they landed 3 on Monday and saw a few more fish around.

At the Ledges Inn the Past week we had a few fish landed but overall it was very slow fishing. Durck Dewinter and Cliff Marr of Sussex hooked into a double header that had me running with the net. Both fish were very fresh, Durck took his on a black slime pattern and Cliff used a white tail green machine. We saw a few fish over the weekend in the Doaktown area, but it slowed down on Monday and Tuesday and was very slow. Derek Munn's client landed a 16 pound hook bill Tuesday evening and a few local fishermen were hooking up.

Also in the Doaktown area Doctor Peter Dowling lost a salmon on Monday. Tuesday Manny Lyons landed a salmon and lost another on a Ally Shrimp. Keven Lyons landed a grilse on a bomber on Tuesday.
Lloyd Lyons & Muddler Allen MacNutt

Dan Bullock of Bullocks Lodge said it was a slow week with spring like conditions. Saturday evening did produce some action with a hookup on an RBM and 4 other fish hitting the Green Butt Bear and RBM muddler. Hoping for stabilized dropping water in the coming days. Water temp hit 50 F Monday morning in the Boistown area.

Keith Wilson of Wilson's Sporting Camps said they are still hooking a few fish but are older fish. Keith said water conditions were high but no complaints on this end as we need the water to set up a good fall season. We landed a fiesty grilse at Dudley Saturday morning with a #10 green machine. I would never have thought a #10 would work in the high water, so it goes to show one never knows what will work.

A little news on the Stripe Bass in the Miramichi Rivers system. David Whyte said apparently the bass have started back up our river system for their wintering ritual. Unfortunately, the second season which was opened to appease the coastal region was a flop. It was actually 2 to 3 weeks too early. A person may not find very many striped bass on the North West side of the river this time of year but in the brackish water on the South West side around Strawberry Marsh. One should again do fairly well within the next few weeks. Remember it is a catch and release only.

Flies of choice the past week were Ally Shrimps, Tippet Shrimps, Green machines, Undertakers, Black Slimes and Green Butt Bear Hairs. River temperatures are awesome in the low 60's and even got down to 50's (F) on Monday morning.

Even though conditions are not as good as we would like to have it here on the Miramichi River going into September. Just being on the water where the chance of hooking an Atlantic Salmon can make that trip an everlasting memory. So many anglers will tell you it's not always about the catch, as much as being there doing what you love to do with friends.

So come out and throw a line this fall on the Miramichi River and enjoy the beautiful scenery we have to offer. We see several eagles, ospreys, ducks, geese, moose and deer along the river valley while were fishing. Also over the next few weeks our Fall Foliage will be amazing with red, orange, yellow and mixed with our dark green softwoods that make it breathtaking.

Tight Lines.

Heavy Rains Hammer the Miramichi

When it rains it pours, and that is exactly what happened on the Miramichi river system this week. As the banks of the Miramichi River was finally starting to get to perfect levels for fishing pools and having fish hold up a bit.

When! Old Mother Nature had a much different look at things, as the river got hammered hard with heavy rains Monday and Tuesday morning. With so much rain in a short period of time the levels were rising very fast on the river Tuesday afternoon.

Grilse I released using the new Hardy Jet series 14 Spey Rod
Then late Tuesday night the SW Miramichi got hit with over another inch of rain in Clearwater and conditions were still rising Wednesday.

Visibility is good despite the high water conditions but the few fish that were jumping was not taking a thing.

Conditions were just getting good on the lower stretches of the river and almost to perfect levels before the rain. The upper stretches from Doaktown to Boistown were at great levels but with all the rain it will be a week or so before conditions improve again.Temperatures are perfect in the high 50's and low 60's which is awesome going into September.

Last weekend and up until Tuesday morning we were picking up a few salmon. Flies again was the Paul Caron stone fly, wt green machine, samething Murray's and bombers.

This is a picture of a boat I rescued this week in the Doaktown area. The owner was very happy.

Paul Caron Stone Fly
Stonefly Caron Signature / A. Jackson.
David Bishop says this is one of his favourite flies ever. Paul Caron, a good friend and awesome angler developed this fly. You NEED them in ALL SIZES. Period! Find out more by going to www.salmonsteelheadflies.com and see many great looking patterns that David has on hand.

At The Ledges Inn in Doaktown we were having half decent fishing. With all the rain our pools are a bit high to fish properly so back to boat fishing. It will take a few days to improve. This is a picture I took of guide Derek Munn and Richard Campbell of PEI just before the rise in water. We hooked 3 and landed two that night. The other salmon was landed by Allan Moore of PEI and all fish were landed on Hardy gear.

Guest at Bullocks Lodge

Dan Bullock of Bullocks Lodge had a good week of fishing in Boiestown. Fish were caught almost every day with great conditions and fish starting to show in bigger numbers. The fly of the week was definitely the Yellow Winged Butterfly, with the RBM Muddlers and Glitter Bear also being noteworthy. 3 1/8inches of rain in past 24 hours are going to make the next few days a challenge.

Wilson Sporting Camps said conditions were slow in their area. A few fish were around but seemed to be a lot of old fish. With all the rain it's looking good going into September for the fish.

Country Haven Lodge said before the raise in water on the lower stretch of the SW Miramichi river fish were just starting to hold in their pools. They landed fish last week and Monday on peach carter bugs. But with the rain monday and Tuesday night and rising water this morning, fish will probably be on the move again.

Paraglidders having a blast on the river over the weekend as anglers fish below.

Ghislain Basque posted this for a friend, this may help him. (My folding Frabill net ($80.00) was stolen at the Cache pool today. We were parked on the shore below the pool and stood the net half way of the pool. While we were lunching on the tailgate someone came down the trail at the head of the pool and fished for a while where we could see him from the truck. The net was on shore around enough of a bend that we couldn't see him take it but when he left it was gone! It has my name and number on it; John Farnham 375-8655 )... also a video from you tube. Perhaps someone picked it up by mistake and is looking to return it.

Many fishermen are hoping the fall run of salmon will start with this high water we have. I'd say the Miramichi is about high enough, lets hope they make their way in soon.

Until next week keep your lines tight and reels screaming on the river.
